Evil cockroaches and tooth fairies!

I saw two Guillermo del Toro films today. The first was Mimic(1997), directed by del Toro and it was my first time seeing it. The other one was Don't be Afraid of the Dark(2011) which was co-written and produced by him. I liked both movies but I prefer the cinematography from the latter one; del Toro's obsession toward evil and hideous tooth fairies really shines in this one and it was such a fun movie to watch! I did some camera studies while watching them and it was so much fun. Here are some studies I did on my sketchbook. They're done with black pentel stylo and china markers and then edited in Photoshop.

I'm gonna try to make this a consistent habit. I really do feel that I learn a lot sketching from movies; adding this to my New Year's Resolution!!

Santa Monica sketch outing!

I went to Santa Monica today with my friend Thomas for a sketch outing. We both rented a bike and cycled from Santa Monica pier to Venice beach and then all the way to Pacific Palisades before returning to Santa Monica. We made stops in-between to sketch people and here are some sketches from today that I like!

I'll be going off to New York in two days for about a week and a half for Christmas and New Years; I'm hoping to come back with some amazing sketches! I CAN'T WAITTTT!!!!

Demons.

My second year film concept I did as an assignment for my Layout class by Dan Hansen.
I can't even explain in words how much I love Dan's class. Every single layout class I learn to look at films in a whole new different perspective and I get to put them into practice in my own artwork. I'm growing to love filmmaking more and more each day. It's just so easy to be in love with it.

Homely workspace

A drawing I did for my layout class. We were told to come up with a design of a place/room that reflects who we are. I guess this is kinda how I would want my workspace to look like in the future.

The Story Behind the Pose.

Often times I find it challenging to draw a nude model without a story behind the pose. That was what happened in my life drawing class tonight. I practically hit the brick wall and did not like any of my drawings until Stuart who is my life drawing instructor approached and told me to think of a story behind the pose and put them in a situation. Once I did that, everything was so much more easier and fun to draw! I was more relaxed and focused and ideas kept pouring in! I remember reading about the importance of the story behind the pose from Walt Stanchfield's "Drawn To Life" but I guess I was blinded by the importance of the gesture itself and forgot that there's always a story that support the pose.

Anyway, here are some of my favorites from tonight's class!
(3-5 minute poses) done with Sharpie on newsprints.

Rabbit Hallway

Made a drawing that I really like in my life drawing class today. We had to come up with a cinematic composition and Alice was the theme of the day. The model posed for us and a image of a bunny was projected onto the screen. I wanted the bunny to play a bigger role in my version of Alice, so here it is! Alice walking through the Rabbit Hallway.

El Capitan's Rob Richards.

So for the first time I finally visited the El Capitan theater in Hollywood today to catch a Cinderella screening with my friends. My favorite part of the show was the organ performance by Rob Richards who's the theater's house organist. He played many of the classic Disney songs on the organ before the screening and it was so nostalgic watching him play.

Here's a picture I drew of him and his organ on an A4 paper with a sharpie before he ended his performance.

I'll definitely make another visit again just to hear and watch him play.
