Entomologist.

I did some story sketches that I really like in my gesture drawing class tonight! The model had so many great poses and I had the idea of drawing her as an entomologist! I just wanna say here that Stuart Livingston's gesture drawing class is AMAZING and short poses are really my thing. I've benefited so much from this class I can't wait to see where it'll continue to take me!

Anyway, I have a plan of coming up with a story of an entomologist exploring a deadly jungle somewhere in a land unbeknownst to man; that should also go into my portfolio this year. I was a little antsy on not having much to show for my portfolio this year but things are finally starting to look up!  Here are the sketches that were done with china markers and then painted over in photoshop! ENJOY!

And some 2 minute gestures to go with these drawings!

More to come!! :)

Familiar works

The 2013 CalArts Character Animation Gallery Show is happening this coming Thursday (Dec 17th), the first week of spring semester. I'm glad this will be out of my way now before film gets crazy. Since I don't have a lot of time to make new drawings I figure it'd be great to paint over some of my New York life drawings digitally. Anyway, here are some of my work I'm considering for the show.

The spring semester starts tomorrow and I'm really excited to see where the beginning of year 2013 will take me! I hope everyone's year has been GREAT so far!

Watercolor!

I recently got myself a portable Winsor & Newton watercolor field painting set while I was in New York and I really wanted to try it out. I spent all day today working on my film's concept art with my newfound treasure and here's two that turned out decent.

Here's a picture of my wip in which you can also see the painting set!

I've always been a huge fan of the beautiful concept art paintings seen in the Miyazaki Art-of books! Ever since I got hold of my first copy of the Art of Kiki's Delivery Service, I've always wanted to work with watercolors so when I finally did, it felt like I had a breakthrough and it was a very fulfilling and uplifting moment! Transitioning from digital to traditional painting to me was no easy job, although I did have tons of fun mixing and matching colors and painting to Benny Goodman music in the background was like the icing on the cake. I'm gonna do more watercolors and try to get better at it!

NEW YORK!!

So my friends and I just came back from New York yesterday and it was such a FANTASTIC trip! We got to meet my friend Isaac whom we haven't seen since the beginning of last summer and got to visit most of the places we wanted to go! Isaac was the best tour guide anyone could ever ask for! Isaac if you're seeing this, THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

One of the best things that happened in New York while we were there was that it actually snowed on Christmas Eve! I asked around and apparently it hasn't snowed in 8 years on Christmas Eve so it was a miracle! It snowed on and off for about 3 to 4 days during our visit and those moments were magical since I've never been in snow before (it actually did snow for 10 seconds in Valencia but I'm not counting that.) HOOORAYY!!! I also finally got to see some musicals on Broadway, something that I've been longing for since young! I saw "Nice Work if You Can Get It, Chaplin: The Musical, Newsies and Wicked" and they're probably one of the best things that ever happened to my life! Oh and we also went for the Ball Drop on New Year's Eve and it was CRAZY.

Anyway, here are some New York sketches! I was hoping I could sketch more but I did have a lot of fun exploring the city and there's so much that I love about New York!

I'm hoping to post more about the trip soon so stay tuned!
